Within 8 working days of arrival, all NON-EU citizens who hold a valid student visa for Italy must apply for stay permit for study purposes (Permesso di soggiorno per motivi di studio).
The stay permit is issued by the local Police Department- “Questura - Ufficio Stranieri”- of the applicant’s place of residence in Italy, however the applicant must submit his/her application at a Post Office.
Procedure for applying for a student residence permit:
- Collect from the Post Office an Application Kit for Non-EU citizens. It is free of charge.
- Complete the Post Office Application Kit. Only Form 1 (Modulo1) must be filled in.
- The following documents must be enclosed with the application:
- Photocopy of the pages containing personal data + student Visa page of the passport. The original document will have to be presented when submitting the application at the Post Office.
- Photocopy of an Indian insurance policy or receipt of payment for Italian insurance policy, valid throughout the country and for the entire period of validity of the residence permit, for the risk of illness and injury.
- Photocopy of the university/ institute acceptance letter or declaration of enrolment. The document must be sealed/stamped by the Italian Embassy /Consulate in India or in the country of application of the visa.
- Photocopy of Financial Statement certifying adequate financial resources for the validity period of the residence permit. Financial resources available should be no less that € 6,079.45. If you have a scholarship, you have to submit a copy of the letter issued by the scholarship awarding institution indicating the details of your grant.
- 4 recent and identical passport-size photographs.
- Fees to be paid at the post office for the student residence permit:
- € 16.00 to purchase 1 (one) Italian revenue stamp of (Marca da Bollo) It can be purchased in any tobacco shop and it has to be placed on the completed application form.
- € 30.46 to issue the Electronic Permit of Stay (PSE).
- € 40.00 to issue a permit of stay with validity from 3 (three) months to 1 (one) year
- The payment slips are available at the Post Office.
Do not submit original documents in the Post Office application, submit only photocopies.
After submitting the documents to the Post Office, the applicant should receive:
- A receipt (mod.22A) with the user ID and password required to check the status of the application online at following website: http://www.portaleimmigrazione.it/
- A letter with the appointment date and time at a Police Station. In some cases the appointment letter is not issued by the Post Office, and it will be sent later to the applicant by registered post to his/her address in Italy. This does not always happen; frequently check the status of the application at the following website:
http://questure.poliziadistato.it/stranieri/?mime or at http://www.portaleimmigrazione.it/ for your appointment (using your user ID and password found on your receipt).
On the appointment date, at the Police Station- Immigration Office, the following documents must be presented in original:
- Passport or other equivalent document.
- University/ institute acceptance letter or declaration of enrolment, sealed/stamped by the Italian Embassy /Consulates in India or in the country of application of the student visa.
- Indian insurance policy or receipt of payment for Italian insurance policy, valid throughout the country and for the entire period of validity of the residence permit, for the risk of illness and injury.
- 2 identical passport-size photographs.
- Financial Statement certifying adequate financial resources for the validity period of the residence permit.
- Receipts of the amounts paid at the Post Office.
At the Police Station-Immigration Office, original documents + photocopies must be presented.
